Tax Facts

  • The Newark Tax rate is 1.75%
  • The Newark School District Income Tax is collected by the State of Ohio – see Guide to Links for more information.
  • The Newark Income Tax Office has a dropbox on the 4th Street side of the City Municipal Building.
  • Estimated taxes are required if the prior year’s tax due was $200 or more per the Ohio Revised Code, Section 718.08.
  • You can schedule an appointment to have a member of our staff prepare your Newark City Tax Return for you free of charge – walk-in service is also available.
  • Newark has mandatory registration. All Newark residents age 18 or older are required to register with the Newark Tax Office. Registration forms are available on the Tax Forms page. You may also register by calling our office.
  • Newark has mandatory filing requirements. All Newark residents age 18 or older are required to file an annual Newark City Tax Return by April 15th each year regardless of their income. Click here to access forms.
  • If you are a Newark Resident age 18 or older and did not work during the year, please file an EX form by April 15th.

Paymentus processes online payments for the Newark Tax Office.  They accept electronic checks, Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card.  Note:  There is a processing fee to use this service.

Mandatory Filing and Registration

The Newark Tax Ordinance has a Mandatory Registration Section that requires all residents age 18 or older to register with the Newark Tax Office. Registration is easy. Click here to access our Registration Form.

Newark’s Ordinance also has a mandatory filing requirement. All residents who are 18 or older are required to file an annual Newark City Tax Return regardless of their income. There are three forms to simplify meeting your filing requirement.

EX – The EX annual return is for all residents who have no income or whose income is not subject to Newark Tax.

SF – The SF annual return is for all residents who have only W-2 income.

LF – The LF annual return is for all other residents.

2023 Individual Returns Due – April 15th, 2024

2023 Net Profit Returns Due – April 15th, 2024

2024 Individual Estimated Tax Due:

  • 1st Quarter – April 15th
  • 2nd Quarter – June 17th
  • 3rd Quarter – September 16th
  • 4th Quarter – January 15th, 2025

2024 Business Estimated Tax Due:

  • 1st Quarter – April 15th
  • 2nd Quarter – June 17th
  • 3rd Quarter – September 16th
  • 4th Quarter – December 16th

2024 Withholding:

ACH Credit Program

The Newark Income Tax Office offers a program that allows employers to submit payments through an ACH credit file.  To participate in this program, your bank m ust be able to process an adenda record in a .ctx format – please verify with your bank before applying.

Interest Rates by the Years:

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2025, will be 10% per annum (.833% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2024, will be 10% per annum (.833% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2023, will be 7% per annum (.583% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2022, will be 5% per annum (.417% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2021, will be 5% per annum (.417% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2020, will be 7% per annum (.583% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2019, will be 7% per annum (.583% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year beginning January 1, 2018, will be 6% per annum (.500% per month).

The interest rate on unpaid taxes for tax year 2015 and prior is still 18% per annum (1.5% per month).
