2024 Street Resurfacing Map and List

Below is the 2024 Street Resurfacing Map and List. This project entails 9.7 miles of street paving and 1.2 miles of alley paving with an overall budget of $2 Million. The project is expected to be completed no later than the fall of 2024. 

Raccoon Creek - Cherry Bend Slope Repair

This project consists of installing approximately 200 feet of sheet pile retaining wall with concrete cap and fencing along Raccoon Creek, west of Cherry Bend Drive, to stabilize the channel bank.

A portion of the TJ Evans Trail will be closed for the duration of construction.

Downtown Utility Burial Project - Phase 2

Downtown Newark still has many overhead electric and communication lines. These lines pose  health and safety hazards through the risk of fire, shock, or arc, and are susceptible to severe weather events. Therefore, the City, in cooperation with AEP, has contracted with Claypool Electric to bury the lines underground in a manner consistent with current safety and building codes.

Alley closures and a brief closure of Walnut Street will be necessary.

South 11th Street Improvements

South 11th Street Improvements
(between West Main Street and Jefferson Street); including the south side of West Main Street and the North side of Jefferson Street, to a location approximately 400 feet east of South 11th Street.

This project includes the following:
• Curb and gutter with inlets to improve drainage
• Sidewalk
• Resurfacing

Road closures will be necessary for the construction of this project, particularly on S. 11th St.

West Church Street Improvements

The project location is West Church Street between North 29th Street and Dietrich Street. The project is an extension of the previous project completed west of North 29th Street, and will provide:

Storm sewer to convey stormwater runoff

Curb and gutter to control stormwater runoff

Sidewalk on both sides of the street for pedestrian safety

New pavement with a center turn lane to improve safety for turning motorists

 Road closures will be necessary for the construction of this project.

Granville Road Bridge & Multi-Use Path

This project will replace the Granville Road bridge over the Log Pond Run Diversion Channel that was originally constructed in 1980. Minor repairs were completed in 2023 to improve its structural integrity; however, it remains load restricted. The plan is to replace the existing three-span steel beam structure with a single span concrete arch culvert. This project will also include the construction of a multi-use path on the north side of Granville Road from North 21st Street to University Drive at the OSU Campus in order to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety in the area. The City has currently obtained nearly $1.8 million for construction from ODOT, and is continuing to pursue additional outside funding sources.

Road closures will be necessary for the construction of this project, particularly for the bridge reconstruction.

Thornwood Drive Improvements (The Hill)

This project will reconstruct approximately 2/3-mile of roadway on Thornwood Drive, between River Road and Faye Drive. The new roadway will have standard width lanes and shoulders. A modern roundabout is proposed at the intersection with West Main Street to improve safety and capacity at that intersection. This project is in the preliminary stages and more details will be provided when available.

Road closures will be necessary for the construction of this project.

Thornwood Drive Improvements (Railroad Tracks to Faye Drive)

This project will reconstruct approximately 1/3-mile of roadway on Thornwood Drive, between the Railroad Tracks and Faye Drive.

A single-lane modern roundabout is proposed for the Faye Drive intersection.

Road closures will be necessary for this project.

Waterworks Road Bridge Repairs

The purpose of this project is to perform minor repairs to extend the expected service life of the bridge. Repairs include the replacement of expansion joints and abutment bearings, abutment patching, and road surface overlay and sealing.

Downtown Parking Garage

Construction of a 5-story parking garage, with approximately 400 spaces, located on the east side of South 4th Street, between West Main Street and West Market Street.

Riverside Drive Bridge (over Log Pond Run)

Replacement of the existing cast-in-place concrete slab bridge constructed in 1935 with a three-sided concrete box culvert.

West Main Street Improvements (Builders Drive to Coffman Road)

This project consists of the widening of West Main Street for a center turn lane and includes; curb and gutter, storm sewer, and a shared-use path.

North 21st Street Widening at Granville Road

Widening for a 3rd southbound through lane, just north of Granville Road, that will connect to the existing dedicated southbound right turn lane to the State Route 16 westbound entrance ramp. An eastbound right turn lane on Granville Road will also be added. Turning radii on the northwest and southwest corners will be increased. Crosswalks, accessible paths, and accessible signals will be provided on all corners of the intersection, and this project will provide a connection for the proposed multi-use path on Granville Road. The traffic signal will be upgraded as well.

A closure of Granville Road will be necessary for the construction of this project.

Construction of this project is contingent upon award of funds applied for through the Ohio Public Works Commission.

River Road Culvert Replacement (at Park Trails Drive)

Replacement of a failing corrugated steel pipe culvert with an elliptical concrete pipe culvert. This project also includes the improvement of existing drainage ditches.
